“Beautiful, witty and yet unsettling” Rock Solid? 2 at The People’s Gallery, Kendal Museum ROCK SOLID? 2 “Atomic Wastes Under Cumbria?” Rock Solid? 2 is an exciting new Art Trail and Exhibition at The People’s Gallery, Kendal Museum exploring the plan to try to contain atomic wastes deep inside the Lake District’s beautiful and complex coastal geology.. The Preview on 10th May was attended by the newly elected Mayor of Kendal, Councillor Jonathon Cornthwaite on a night that saw the People’s Gallery buzzing with people eager to see the exhibition described by visitors as a “beautiful, witty and yet unsettling collection” and “You come away from this show with deep thoughts indeed.” HEAVYWEIGHTS OF THE CUMBRIAN ART WORLD The exhibition brings together heavyweights of the Cumbrian and international art world. John Moore’s Painting Prize winner Martin Greenland is Guest Artist. Other Cumbrian icons taking part are Julian Cooper, internationally renowned for iconic mountain paintings and Russell Mills who has produced record covers for some of the biggest names in rock music. Altogether 20 artists have produced artworks including comic books, installations and multi-media inspired by the plan to use coastal geology to try and contain humanity’s most long lived and dangerous wastes. A painting by artist Irene Sanderson is created using West Cumbrian geology and features the legacy of historic mining.
EXPERTS ASK: “ATOMIC WASTES UNDER CUMBRIA?" Events have included a talk: Atomic Wastes Under Cumbria?” with Dr Ian Fairlie, an expert on radiation in the environment and Richard Outram of Nuclear Free Local Authorities and future events will include a geology, wildlife and literature walk along the Cumbrian coastline from St Bees to Jonathon Swift’s House at Whitehaven (date tbc). RESONATES WITH THOSE WHO LOVE THE LAKE DISTICT The exhibition has been co-ordinated by participating artist Marianne Birkby who said “The response to Rock Solid?2 has been amazing both from artists, from participating shops in Kendal and from the public showing that this is a subject that resonates with those who love the Lake District from the mountains to the sea.” Rock Solid?2 runs until 29th June at the People’s Gallery, Kendal Museum Station Road, Kendal, GB LA9 6BT.  New Year Greetings from Rock Solid 2 In this blogpost we look back at the past- what was happening in 1995 when NIREX (now Nuclear Waste Services) were pushing to deliver a "Rock Laboratory" in the Gosforth area of Cumbria near Sellafield.  The Rock Laboratory would investigate the geology ahead of a deep repository for LOW and INTERMEDIATE Level Nuclear Wastes.  Other areas of the country had already been looked at and ruled out with the whole of West Cumbria being looked at and narrowed down to the Longlands Farm area of Gosforth as the 'best site' in the UK for further investigation.  Local people saw this investigative "Rock Laboratory" as a Trojan Horse for a final nuclear waste 'repository' now called a Geological Disposal Facility Accross Cumbria large billboards went up sponsored by local people, Greenpeace & Friends of the Earth    The bill boards read: BURY NUCLEAR WASTE AND IT WILL COME BACK TO HAUNT US ALL CUMBRIANS DEMAND A PUBLIC

 CALL OUT FOR ARTISTS! “ROCK SOLID? 2”     Call for Artists 'Rock Solid? 2' invites artists of all mediums to submit works to an exciting new exhibition for next year beginning May 9th 2024    at  Kendal Museum ’s,  The People’s Gallery.     The exhibition encourages creativity and originality in response to the quest to find deep geology in Cumbria from the coastal plain extending under the seabed, to act as “the safest place on earth” for the UK’s heat generating nuclear wastes.    Cumbria’s coastal fringe cradling the iconic Lake District is on the front line of this quixotic quest.    Artworks are invited in all media taking inspiration from the diverse geology of the Lakeland mountains to the Sea.  We are honoured to have    Martin Greenland , an internationally renowned Cumbrian artist and winner of the prestigious John Moores Painting Prize as Guest Artist at Rock Solid? 2.      This exhibition plans to build on the success of the  'Rock Solid?'  exhibition of 20
